is very hard to portray a "regular" person realistically on the big screen. It's much easier and certain to get awards if an actor can portray someone with a physical imperfection, a strong emotional one, or, best of all, both.
Hillary does a great boxer imitation, yeah, but let's see her w/out the gimmicks like all the physical exercise, big ol' southern accent stuff, or portraying a guy. (Last year's female Oscar winner made herself ugly, played a serial killer and....jackpot.)
Scarlett was in a fairly crummy movie about Vermeer recently and she was quite excellent in her understated way. You can't see her acting, unlike many others.
