the time actually to create fully-formed characters. No, it doesn't have a neurotically speeded up, obsessive pace...but it moves along as the plot necessitates. The feeling of menace---the Asian fellow in the curtain, for instance---is marvelous. And the scene in the Jewish neighborhood, and, and, and...
