Well, MapQuest shows a driving distance of 397 miles from Ypres in the north to Belfort near the Swiss border. AAA shows 391.5 miles for the same trip. 500 miles may be an exageration, but 200 miles seems a little small. It's true that most of the action took place in the north ... Ebert may have been relying on a reference that included the Italian front, which was contiguous with the "Western Front."
