A young Reese Witherspoon in her first role plays the younger of two sisters vying for the affections of a new boy in their small rural town. Sam Waterston is the father in this film set in the mid-fifties. There are sub-plots and an unanticipated tragedy toward the end. All in all, an enjoyable coming of age flick.
