Connery was clearly the best actor of the Bonds. I do not know if it quite fair to dismiss Brosnan, et al., because they are not as good as Connery, much like dismissing Elway because his personal stats were not quite as good as Marino's.The lack of toys in the old days may have been less because of the film maker's desire not to use toys, as opposed to the lack of technology, compared with today.
I, too, prefer the old Bond films. But I think that the newer films are a product of their times, and today's audiences require action, gizmos, and stunts. I admit to a preference for a modern bond, rather than no bond, because I think that a return to the old Bond would mean lack of ticket sales, which translates into no studio money to make another Bond.
