Yes, I have seen both, the original one too long ago to remember well, the new version a couple of years back.What it has is the typical Russian war movie flavor... which is to say it is quite realistic overall, albeit with some extra emphasis on heroism, of course... how could it be a war movie without. Tons of humanism.
The original has some of the most famous Russian actors, the new one is mostly populated by younger ones, but one thing for sure - films like this will definitely broaden your horizon, so I wish more people did what you are doing... and not because this is a Russian movie.
Definitely post your impressions of it. Is there a place you can get it? I don't see it in the Amazon link.
