***Human garbage manipulated by unseen forces. A cynical Hollywood point of view. The director is messing with us. No movie could be that bad by accident.
No, this is definitely not an accident. It was made with a sure Oscar shot in mind. Makes you wonder if all that Oscar travesty is prearranged - much like the Soviet "elections" used to be. There must be some Central Planning Commitee, like the Cosa Nostra meetings, deciding upfront on who's gonna get what.
But our real enemy is nobody but us ourselves. I recall some silly Japanese animated movie about some alien forces feeding the Earth population some Boa-Juice that is so addictive you can't stop drinking it and it gradually alters your mind. American Beauty is a glass of such juice. But no one forces us to drink it.
And you know what else is funny? Which movie is more damaging to our brain matter: American Beauty or Dumb and Dumber? There is no question in my mind that the Dumb is far more benign. It is just too obvious. The "Beauty" is like AIDS, it is compleely silent and its effects take years.
In the meantime, I can't complain about my movies weekend. Two good movies so far (well, OK, "Istambul" was not great, but it was not the "Beauty" either), and the third one should be nice tonight too: Tito and I. After another Yogoslavian masterpiece - "Underground", one of my all-time favorites, I can't wait to see this one.
