Quick thoughts on The Da Vinci Code

So I finally saw it tonight, in a wonderfully frigid and mostly empty theater.

1. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about, there are some interesting ideas bandied about, but the film seems to cover enough bases to not completely piss off some people. Oh well.

2. It seems like the consensus is the acting was wooden, and I couldn't agree more. The guy who played Silas seemed to have more emotion than everyone else put together. Hanks seemed to be reading right out of the book just offscreen.

3. They edited out a whole lot of story to fit into a movie, but they didn't change anything to make the transision easier. The technical/historical bits were very well done, but any scene involving more than one character was awkward and unnatural.

4. The location photography was very nice, I wish more movies were shot in places other than LA or Vancouver (acting as any number of other cities.)

Overall, not horrible, but not nearly as good as it could have been. As I heard one critic say, take away the bad acting and poor pacing and you have National Treasure, which sounds about right.

P.S.
I haven't been to Emagine yet, but, for the Detroit area, the Palladium in Birmingham is probably the nicest first-run theater in the Detroit area. At least they can find the focus ring on the projector, unlike most other theaters.
