Re: Saw 'Round Midnight last night...

I saw this at a film festival in Boston in 1986 and the director, Bernard Tavernier, spoke about the film and what it was like to work with Dex. Gordon's character is believed to be an amalgam of saxophonist Lester Young and bop pianist Bud Powell. I particularly appreciated th use of actual jazz musicians in some of the roles. And, as you point out, the music is just superb.
