"Aguirre: Wrath of God." This is the "for adults" version of

"Apocalypse Now."
No histrionics, crazed performances (Kinski's lunacy is controlled fury in its purest essence), overwhelming camera work or blasting music.
From the first majestic scene, certainly among the most beautiful and evocative in film history, to the final one of despair and madness, this film is original, uncompromising, and perhaps the greatest, most economical depiction of the corruption of power and greed.
Herzog didn't need three hours, either. It is a masterfully edited 90 minute ride which will leave you wondering if it applies more to Hitler, Stalin... or Bush.
