perfectly legitimate component resource for the film maker. The important question for me is how well does it serve the overall artistic intention of the film maker? What artful contribution does it make toward deepening the viewer's understanding of the director's language and story? Is overall integrity served or shattered? All of art, especially film, is supposed to raise emotions. Music is an enhancement of the overall complex, no less than the architecture of a particular location or the choice of film stock. Music is even the point in some films.
I just watched Bunuel's That Obscure Object of Desire. It jars my senses to see two women play the same role. Still, I accept it, learn from it and even learn to enjoy it because some nuance of humor is being touched and challenged in my world of understanding. I am being led masterfully to new realms of emotion. Musical examples of the same nature abound.
Cheap thrills can forced on the film audience through any number of means. I actually find music to be a minor factor in this regard. Generally speaking, if the music is out of whack so probably are other elements.
