I didn't find "Breach" slick, either, and was pleased the direction seemed to "flow," not calling attention to itself. Actually, it was somewhat like a play, to me.
Anyhow, I found Burton only excelled in "Spy:" no other film roles of his I recall similarly hit the high notes.
His "Hamlet," which I have on record, is superb...
