American Gangster: a thin film

I have to say I thought this was easy entertainment and absolutely nothing more.
The ease with which our gangster chum arranges to buy and ship huge quantities of smack from SE Asia... well, it actually wasn't even mentioned. One minute he is trying to buy small amounts from street dealers and the next a war lord is taking his money and actually supplying the goods.
Transport? Well here's the stuff in New York and instantly our hero has a big house on the hill... bought just for his dear old mum!
The cop hunting him, surely a Serpico remodel, manages a evening class degree in law while on the job and miraculously becomes DA to prosecute the criminal he just ran down!
America: where dreams come true!
Shame on you, Ridley Scott, for making such a slight film. Bruce Willis could have been in it for all its depth. Arnie could have been in it for all its depth!
It's quite long but zips by but it is neither the Good Fellas nor the Serpico it would love to be. Closer to Kojak I'm afraid.
When did Scott last make a really good film?
