This is Julian Schnabel's astonishing film about Jean-Dominique Bauby who at 42 had a stroke.
He was the editor of Elle in France.
He was left with only one eye and eyelid working.
Not only did he learn or adapt to communicate by the method of blinking when someone read out the right letter, but he wrote a book about it!
This film is about not only him but his family and the people in the hospital who looked after him and it is astonishing.
You could cry a hundred times.
Easily.
I do not want to give away the REAL moments of importance.
But if you do not see this film you WILL regret it.
I cannot remember sitting in a cinema that was as quiet as this.
It is simply astonishing.
How can an actor act when all he can move is one eye?
You will have to see the film to understand how good the performance is.
And the entire film is THAT good.
See it. It is the best film of the year.
