I asked my boss, who owns about a dozen pistols and even more rifles, and he said the gun would have worked fine without ejecting the magazine and blowing in the chamber. They must have done that for "dramatic effect."
With the dog about to overtake him, this unnecesssary action reduced his reaction time, so that when he finally did shoot it, the dog ended up dead in Moss' lap. That's all I can figure out. A great scene, nonetheless.
