Patrick,
Certainly "Sabrina" is a lot of fun. It's a good balance between being a fairy tale- implausible and as you say "a script not without fault", but that's the nature of a Cinderella story. I thought Holden did well in his role as the wastrel playboy- he's good at characters of shrewd insouciance- "Stalag 17","Sunset Boulevard". Mr. Bogart was a bit old for his part, but you can see his tough, business facade creaking and cracking as Audrey Hepburn adorability sinks in- and that is more or less the same story with the other Miss Hepburn in "The African Queen".
Some movies have an odd detail that stick in my mind and in "Sabrina" it's the gigantic "Larrabee Building" in downtown Manhattan and in front of this vast edifice is a single parking space marked off. Holden drives his Nash-Healey roodster up, parks, and jumps out. The contrast between the power of the corporate headquarters and Holden, who doesn't have a clue about business but has this special priveledge, is an interesting detail.
The 1995 remake with Harrison Ford of course gets it all wrong by trying to make a fariy tale "realistic" and it sucks all the fun out and falls flat.
Cheers,
Bambi B
