When I saw the movie, I was not that impressed with the narrative elements. It seemed that Lewis' character was just a mono-maniacal beast. But, then I got to thinking (usually a bad thing). What if that character is really the hero, a Nietzschean superman? He, through force of will and willingness to do whatever it takes, gets the oil out of the ground. None of the sheeplike townfolk would ever be able to do this. He transforms the piss-poor land into something productive. That is also the reason why the wannabe preacher is his mortal enemy -- someone engaged in herding the flock of sheep -- is totally anathema to such supermen.
With this take on the movie, at least the story becomes a bit more interesting. Particularly so because it would be a total perversion of the novel "Oil," upon which the movie is supposedly based.
