Perhaps a "soft focus" sensibility from 1971...

...soured the boxoffice from bigoted toughnecks like Fonda's powerful patriarch. I've met a few, and they really can be "bigger than life", with wicked humor.

I really liked how the "long haired college BOY" was being ribbed by Fonda - all the while being the MAN on the side with Lee Remick.

Great tone and dynamics throughout - politically incorrect far before the term was coined.

(I've seen the DVD available on line - and will eventually have to procure a copy.)

I liked "Ryans Daughter" as well - good is good regardless of popularity.
