Martin did a horrible job telling the story of Leonard Chess because she couldn't decide what story to tell. Was it about Muddy Waters? Little Walter? Chuck Berry? Etta James? All of the above. An unfocused, superficial, self-serving piece of crap. There were a couple scenes with Adrien Brody and Beyonce I could sink my teeth into but otherwise, it was fluff. The sad part is that there are real stories and there is real soul there. But to portray the hit songs, Martin showed bizarre studio or club footage and then a billboard chart. so stupid. There was no real celebration of the original musicians and their lives, just a cheap attempt to rely on the audience's preconceptions about race and the music business to string together various vignettes.
