Special effects were excellent. THe ending was a bit hoakie for my tastes.
As far as plot holes, it might have been justified by the children actually having to agree to leave their parents, though even then, are the children in any position to make "informed" decisions ? Or, the aliens did not really want their presence known to a wider audience until the very end.
The bit about predictability of specific disasters (e.g. airplance/train crashes) had to have a supernatural connotation. Although the biggest disaster at the end might have been predicted by (Super) Science.
The "super flare" itself was a huge hole scientifically. If such a flare had occurred anytime within the past billion or two years ago, life would not exist on Earth today, at least not without massive "intelligent intervention". The geological record doesn't suggest hyperflares have ever occurred.
OTOH, this "superflare" could have been induced by "aliens"/"God"(?) as part of a plan to "reboot" the human race....
