other WW2 themes; " The Rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang being one of the better ones; there's a Japanese newspaper front page reprinted in "Rape" where two army officers held a competition in Nanking to see who could behead ( with swords ) the most people in a day; and both photo + tallies are in the text of the report
The Japanese education ministry vehemently denied the authenticity of this reprint, until the newspaper located their own copy on microfiche + other library sources confirmed their copies; a major furore at the time in Japan + quite an international scandal
I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Chang many years ago + discussed her book, she has since died ( suicide )
Japan has never adequately come to terms with that time in history
