Tarantino's plots are merely a clothesline for the screenplay, and his homage to classic cinema, some of which he improves upon. There is little doubt that the written word and dialog translated onto the screen is where he gets his jollies. While the premise of Bastards may be goofy, I would challenge you to find any such things in the screenplay. There are websites that allow you to parse the screenplay. Bastards was prototypical Tarantino.
What was Pulp Fiction was about? It was about nothing. If you are watching a Tarantino film and not taking close stock of the dialog, but rather ruminating on the plot, then you are missing most of the film.
