Well, it is about football just not our football. Different game, different rules, different flavors. This is the story of Brian Clough (Michaeal Sheen) who turned out to be the UK's greatest soccer coach and manager despite of himself.Clough, a talented player, teamed up with Pete Taylor (Timothy Spall) to build a 2nd Division team, Derby, into a Division 1 competitor. Later when the larger, wealthier team in Leeds lost its coach (Colm Meaney) to Team England, Clough got the job and did his best to shape it into a clean playing team. He met much resistance and it eventually led to his sack only for him to eventually be the only England coach to win the European Cup twice in a row.
Granted, it helps to be a soccer fanatic or a UKer to get the most out of this drama of ego and hubris well-played by Sheen. And unlike our football movies there is a sad lack of cheerleaders, babes, drugs, and off field fighting. This is a story of a doggedly determined coach to be the best. Clough, when asked if he thought he was the best English coach answered: "I'm not sure about that but I am the best of ONE."
Not a film for everyone. If you are an Anglophile, dive in.
