So I saw the British version in a theater and the audience was almost literally rolling in the aisles. Since then, I have forced viewings on family and friends, most of whom enjoyed it, but I guess they didn't find it as hilarious as I did. And I've watched it a couple of more times and caught a few more nuances, like the dead father's favorite Bible verse close to the beginning.
Whether it is the halo effect or not, I find the trailer for the new American version pretty hilarious in its own right. I am sorry indeed that they reveal some of the massive plot surprises in the trailer, and would urge anyone who has not seen the original to avoid the trailer.
But it looks like the same basic debacle, but an American black family instead of a British one. And it looks funny.
