Sergeant Sanborn goes from not wanting a kid to wanting a kid through his experience. Also his relationship with Sgt James goes from disrespect to respect. At first he's pissed off about James' methods but when he realizes James does have the capacity to be caring not just of his unit but of Iraqis, his opinion changes. The other guy in the unit goes the opposite way, initially respecting James' bravery but ending up hating James and blaming James for wounds suffered. As for James himself, he does not develop but that's a strength of the movie, not a weakness. He is the stationary character around which the others revolve. He is shown in many different situations and always stays in character. It works.
