Really, guys, it is shameful that such films would be even nominated... even in the US. On a scale of 0 to 10 it hovers around 3-4.At least I didn't have to pay for popcorn and I had a cheap date.

... and I await the opinion of anyone who has actually seen the film who thinks it's good enough to be taken seriously let alone win an award.
No wo0nder Guy Pierce took a role where he was blown up after 2 minutes.
saw it in a theater when it first came out. I also liked Avatar and Inglorious Basterds. And Up. And An Education. If any of them win an award, it's OK with me. Never saw The Blind Side. Never saw Precious.
I thought The Hurt Locker was very good, if not great, very well directed and acted.
I also liked An Education a lot, very underrated IMO. I enjoyed Up. Avatar was beautiful to look at and not much else. I'm not sure what I think of Precious. The Blind Side was a crowd pleaser but a definite B type movie. Or more like a C movie. District 9 was interesting, but Moon gets my vote for best thoughtful SF flick of 09.
I can't summon up much outrage over BP noms and not much over this years winners because the Oscars patently have so little to do with the "best film" of any given year, an impossible assignment in any case. The Oscars are what they are - an industry function, more about film biz than film art. They do occassionally reward film excellence, but that's no certain thing.
I don't usually like, much less think well of, most BP winners. There are far more great films that did not win a BP statue (or weren't even evern nominated) than there are great films that did.
It looks good, but there is no plot. It's just a series of action sequences, like a porno movie.
The dialog is lame. No character development either.
I hate the jerky-cam effects every time there was action (maybe the camera-man was epileptic?), along with the dubbing of over-the-top jet/helicopter noises. I appreciate it was made on a budget.
The military tactics are ridiculous. In the scene where they are sent to do a forensic examination of a bombing, they decide to go off chasing insurgents. I'm sure bomb techs do that all the time. I saw some ex-military guy on the Jim Lehrer News Hour a couple of days ago really criticising this aspect of the movie.
I really wanted to enjoy this movie. It could have been so much better by offering a deep insight into the lives of bomb techs, rather than serving up tired old cliches...
Sergeant Sanborn goes from not wanting a kid to wanting a kid through his experience. Also his relationship with Sgt James goes from disrespect to respect. At first he's pissed off about James' methods but when he realizes James does have the capacity to be caring not just of his unit but of Iraqis, his opinion slowly evolves. The other guy in the unit goes the opposite way, initially respecting James' bravery but ending up hating James and blaming James for wounds suffered. As for James himself, he does not develop but that's a strength of the movie, not a weakness. He is the stationary character around which the others revolve. He is shown in many different situations and always stays in character. It works.

i thought this was a bad year for movies and the mindless ones worked best for me: Zombieland, Sherlock Holmes and Hurt Locker were just fine. I thought Hurt Locker put you in the middle of the action and had decent production detail, sound design and performances. I want it to win best picture just to stick it to Avatar.

More Hollywood nonsense on the soldier's psyche. I was really disappointed. The sniper scene was the part well done.

There were no believable scenes in that movie, even in the US.

Jacket" which, although it had action scenes, was balanced with psychologically even more intense ones.
I bet you'd like "The Red and the White," though.
