and the much earlier, "The Report."
CC is a mysterious love story about two people that meet at an art gathering. Over the course of their visit to a small Italian town notable for its art and architecture, an obscure story about them slowly unfolds. Brilliant, mature examination of parenting, marriage, and love--- if you like Bergman, this will be your cup of ice and snow. Juliette Binoche absolutely is amazing: beautiful actress in an Oscar-worthy performance.
"The Report:" a young man with a young family faces a mounting number of problems both at home and at the office and, though not any particular one is overwhelming, the total effect--- and his increasing unease and discomfort--- threatens to explode and consume his world.
This is the singularly most upsetting film I can recall: the rising tension is masterfully built--- I actually thought of fast-forwarding through several scenes such was the unrelenting buildup of pressure. BTW, the woman lead in this film (1979) emigrated to the US and received an Oscar nomination for the film, "House of Sand and Fog." She is VERY good in this film, too.
Rest assured my friends, in Muslim countries, people face the same problems as we: financial, marital, work-related.
This is very different from his later films; in fact, Kiarostami mirrors Bela Tarr's progression: his earlier films also were about volcanic family situations.
Neither one of these films makes for an easy watch, but both are milestones of modern film.
