In Reply to: "triteness and cliche" my concern with a Ron Howard film, I may go tomorrow however, I will report back posted by PhilJ on September 27, 2013 at 16:54:06:
I'm not a Ron Howard fan - I disliked A Beautiful Mind and think he generally has difficulty with the endings in many of his movies, a trait he shares with the vastly more talented Stephen Spielberg.
BUT...Rush is higly entertaining and is no more cliched and trite than say...The Butler. (Puts on flameproof suit.)
The real life events of the 1976 F1 championsh series are so dramatic in themselves that one could be forgiven for thinking them a screenwriter's invention. But Lauda really did drive in the final season race in Japan only 6 weeks after being severely burned in a horrific race crash in Germany. He and Hunt were neck and neck for the world title, separated by only a few points. Etc etc. If the plot was total fiction you wouldn't buy it. But even though I knew what happened before I saw Rush, I still enjoyed it a lot, and if you like suto racing it's worth a view for those scenes alone.
