Eddie busted his bunions imitating Hawking while Jones was far more reserved as his proper girlfriend and wife. Surprisingly, the story includes the marital "difficulties" the pair had during their many years together. I could not help but wonder what the point of this film was? To generate sympathy for the inanimate atheist or to show he and his wife had normal problems and dealt with them in normal ways? The Hawkings did not live happily ever after and this is their story not so much his science.
Within the first hour one of the main questions is addressed. What about that thing below the belt? His college friend infers and Hawking said his ALS effects voluntary muscles not autonomic. Yep, he has three kids to prove that. There is a celestial joker about. In the closing we see that Hawking refused a Knighthood! Pretty bold, I say.
The production values are right there at the top as with all nicely budgeted Brit films. That's what they do: locations, costumes, and stage craft. The story is well-paced but I still feel a bit left out. I'm not sure if it was worth the whole two hours. Perhaps one might feel a bit more sympathetic towards Steven and maybe that's the point. His ex collaborated on the script so we are seeing his conflicts not his mind or work.
I thought Redmayne was a shoe-in for best actor after seeing various trailers but after seeing two hours of him I think any win he may get is from the sentimentality of it all.
