You read that into it because that is what you are inclined to see. I suspect you would also read a similar 'not-so underlying theme' into the original 1959 Disney animated film "Sleeping Beauty". Except that maleficent is a resentful woman intent on extracting revenge by victimizing the daughter of a powerful man whom she resents. Read into it what you will.

The revenge motives and measures are essentially the same in both films but with a difference; In Maleficent (the film) the main protagonist -is- Maleficent. In SB the protagonist is the young woman who has been victimized by Maleficents' wrath. Two very different points of view.

Turn the page into today's reality in western society. (2015 real life)
We now live in a society where women are increasingly taking on leading roles in business. Particularly large corporate businesses. Perhaps in this current environment it would seem likely that some men are going to feel some resentment after having been exposed to ambitious and agressive professional women who show just as much ruthlessness in their upward climb toward personal success as have men. Some men are going to be displaced by these ambitious and aggressive women professionals. All I have to say is "look out and watch your six". The world has become more complex than it was recently.
