Well, let me be honest: when it comes to TLJ, I can never get enough of him, so it was with great expectation that I coerced my wife into watching The Homesman.

To make the long story short, I am still enjoying her company, and she keeps talking about the film, so it must have some redeeming quality to it.

This is an underrated gem, plain and simple. Just ignore its small faults, and get absorbed into watching some very fine performances: Hilary Swank is certainly not taking second seat to old man Tommy...

Sure enough, we have seen many, many male-female Wild West duos, so it is hard to be surprised by now, but perhaps it is not right to look for surprises every time, there is more fun in just enjoying things, and The Homesman is... well, you can't quite call it enjoyable, as the subject matter is anything but, but a sad story too has the right to be told well.

Quite recommended... streams on Netflix.
