"...It is my understanding that the "buttery" flavor of most movie grade popcorn is entirely contrived and contains nothing resembling butter. Thus, the concept of "shelf life" is really non-applicable in the context of a human timeframe: kinda like Mobil 1 in its various forms."

A quick google search using key words like "Movie Theater Popcorn" and hits pop up saying things like:
2-day old hot dogs
2-day old popcorn & butter sauce.
So if the people behind me were chewing on 2-day old popcorn, well, I might have been smelling 2nd hand bad-breathy odors of 2-day old mobile-1 butter sauce. Presumably, even artificial (synthetic?) butter sauce will smell and taste better when freshly made and, presumably, all the equipment used to make it has been cleaned prior.
If not rot that I was smelling, then it was nuclear proof but -days old- and unclean popcorn with the bomb-shelter butter sauce.
I'm guessing potential side effects could be one of three things; 1) a powerful laxitive or 2)inducer of fecal impaction.... or 3) cause of significant time delay nausea.
