This one was a big surprise for me. Not the biggest Portman fan but this film is bigger than she is. Surrounded by an able cast, a good script, and a fresh angle, this one kept me tensed a good bit of the time.
Seems three years earlier "something" slammed into a coastal lighthouse and created a zone named the "shimmer" because of its outward appearance. Several teams were sent to explore it but never returned. Portman's hubby had been missing for a year when he mysteriously appeared home, again. Being not quite himself, he was rushed to a facility right outside the Shimmer. It was here that Portman's military and biology background compelled her to volunteer for the next incursion.
Jason Leigh, somewhat of a cold fish, lead the band of five into the shimmer where things of wonder, beauty, and great danger all presented themselves. There is action, drama, and enough pseudo-science to keep most every one satisfied. Near the end, the CGI squad just had to cut loose (as they are want to do) to give us a big show.
I think this one is a sleeper, as such. Compelling, intriguing, well acted. And, fresh.
4 wonks outta 5.
