Some of it is plausible in a scifi kind of way, but mixed with some pseudo science to keep it going. I was thinking that something similar could be possible caused by radiation from a solar flare or maybe some virus causing mutations.The film tickled the imaginatiin. Reminded me of the original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the original "The Thing".
