RE: What software would you use?

One more comment.

All these RPI audio operating systems use one of the base OS platforms:

* Raspbian
* Arch Linux Arm
* Fedora
* Gentoo
* TinyCore Linux

These platforms basically offer a kernel and preintegrated packages.
All these efforts are getting close to 100% redundant projects.

Raspbian is best supported and also used by the RPI Foundation.
As a Debian based distro the packages are usually
not bleeding edge though.

However. The actual SW packages itself are pretty much available on all platforms. They just differ on revisions.

Arch Linux Arm based systems usually are most up2date on the package and kernel/firmware side.

Gentoo based systems are usually best adjusted to the device
HW.

TinyCore - the base OS of pCP - is as small as things can get.
As far as I recall even DietPi is ten times larger.
Arch Linux Arm is 25 times larger then TinyCore Linux. ASF.
They also try to be bleeding edge. pCP is even using custom
revisions of this or that library - e.g. libflac.

What really matters though is the kernel. Having the most up2date
kernel is key. With the kernel come the drivers and firmware.

It's a huge advantage to have your audio device working and flaws corrected in a reasonable time frame. There's actually not such a big
difference between RPI platforms on the kernel side.

pCP offers custom kernels btw. That's a huge advantage over many
other audio RPI OSes. They use it e.g. for driver patches to
allow higher samplerates for this or that device.

Bottom line. There are differences.
If you stay with main stream devices and setups you won't notice many of these though.

Enjoy.
