DVD players in car

Would a cheap home DVD player have trouble tracking w/ the bumps compared to a portable DVD player? Do portables have heartier focusing circuitry and/or memory buffers, for movements?
Rather than get a $600 portable DVD player (or $330 portable TV/DVD combo) for the kids for a road trip, a portable TV and home DVD player would be much cheaper if the player can handle playing while driving down the road.
This would be a similar issue to car CD players - I suspect that they have better mobile characteristics and maybe all have memory buffers that stay on (unlike portable CD players where this is switchable for battery life).
Thanks.
