Can I make HT work in this room?

Hi all,

I have a difficult (I'm finding) room to work with, HT-wise. Could I get some input on whether or not it's worth trying to create some sort of HT environment here?

The room itself is 13.5' by 27', a great 2:1 ratio to start things off. 2/3 is carpeted, 1/3 is linoleum. There's a brick fireplace smack in the middle of the rear wall, and the mantle that surrounds the fireplace fills the entire wall up to about 4.5 feet, and extends (about 4 inches high) 2 feet out into the carpet.

The TV (36" XBR400) sits in the rear corner.

I'd like to get some sort of system here that will provide adequate surround sound for movies, and also room-filling sound for music. Probably 50-50 music-to-DVD ratio, good amount of general TV.

Anyway, I've tried moving the TV in front of the fireplace (we don't really use it), but that doesn't quite work, and along the right wall sort of ruins the room.

I've attached a JPEG with a room layout. Is there anything I can do to this, or should I simply forget it and wait for the next house?

Thanks very much in advance,

John
