I'm not technically-minded at all so I can't help solve the problem. However I have the same problem with a 28" Sony VEGA TV. It bugs the hell out of me. Someone at the Sony helpdesk in Holland (where I bought the set) described it as a "feature". I said that I could speak very loudly for the benefit of the hearing-impaired, but if I constantly shouted then whispered, this "feature" became irritating. They saw (well heard) my point after 30 seconds. Didn't solve my problem though, doesn't solve yours, but at least you are not alone. There is a TV set in suburban Beijing, China doing the same damn thing as your set.
