(Disclaminer, I have the 36AF61)Last year, I helped my mother shop for a 27inch flat screen TV (stand definition). Looked at samsung, sony wega, toshiba, panasonic, philips sets. The gentlemen at best buy, let us hook up a DVD player and a VHS VCR to the units to test. I tried to calibrate the sets as best as I could (but really I didn't know what I was doing at the time).
On DVD material, most were very close to each other. But we prefered the toshiba 27af41 over most. I liked the way it tried grays and silvers, and the colors seemed very "film-like" (whatever that means!) and vivid. I was surprised, since I assumed the Sony Vega (they had two models, one $100 more) was "untouchable." Maybe with professional cabilibration that may be true. But I certainly couldn't adjust it.
Win: Toshiba 27af41
One VHS material (and what I could pick up with an aerial "rabbit ears" and the in-store coax feed) most of the flat screen models images looked "crappy." I mean, worse than $200 walmart TV "crappy." Play with the "sharpness" control a little. Again, to us (YMMV) to the Toshiba 27AF41 seemed to deal with the less than stellar video sources better than the others did. Since most of my mother's viewing would be from OTA (off the air) terrestrial TV and VHS, the TV needed to be forgiving of poor video sources.
Win: Toshiba 27AF41
So in the end we went with the above Toshiba. When you go to the store to compare sets, I think the current model number is 27af42 (maybe 27af43 by now?). If you see something like the 27af62, that probably means it has a 2-tuner picture-in-picture. Though, I suggest you go to the store with Dick's short list (see post below). Also check out Philips.
Epilogue: After seeing my mother's 27inch Toshiba. A friend of mine went out and bought the 36inch model with picture in picture. Then after seeing his model, I went out and bought the same one myself. There is probably better or different, but I like my 36af61. Get out and look at them yourself.
Cheers!
