In the world of DVD, "progressive scan" means taking the native 480i signal that comes out of the MPEG decoder and scaling it up to 480p.That 480p signal is only avaliable at the componet video outputs. S-video and base-band [composite] lack the bandwidth to support 480 lines of resoloution jammed down the pipe, all at once. S-video tops out at ~4MHz or aprox 400p. Componet video, on the other hand, is capable of about 6MHz or 550p.
It might be possible get an extra 80 lines out of a S-video interface if the transmit and receive circuits are of top-notch execution, as well as the cable and all associated connections? However, I have yet to see a TV or DVD player capable of displaying a 480p image via S-video come through our store.
I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of the progressive output on your DVD player until you have a DTV/HDTV capable monitor. Some analogue TV's have a componet video input, but in my expirence none can display anything "above" 480i.
