Agreed. Taking out the cost of video switching and associated sonic liabilities makes some sense.I went with a separate multichannel analog preamp to support my SACD habit since my pre/pro (Proceed AVP) did not support 6-channel analog bypass. I could use the DVD player to do the DD/DTS decoding (am doing this right now since the pre/pro went into the shop) but I will still need the pre/pro for audio from other source components (e.g. cable box, HDTV receiver, etc.). The Pre/Pro does not currently have component video switching; I'd have to get a separate box for this function as well.
I'm in the middle of evaluating an EAD DVDMaster's audio performance to see if I can "lessen" the need for a pre/pro (6-channel balanced outputs are a good sign IMHO). Too bad this piece does not have any digital inputs. It does several other things pretty well. I was quite impressed with film-like video quality when combined with a Sharp 10000 DLP projector but that's another subject (I'm in the hunt for a good HDTV solution).
