Abe,Next generation AV receiver/pre-pros will have four features that distinguish them from current generation units.
1. Digital hirez interface (industry-standard 1394 iLink)
2. Native digital processing (Multi-level Bass Management, Time Alignment and Automatic Room Equalization) for all sources especially multi-channel hirez (DVD-A and SACD)
3. DVI/HDMI video switching
4. Video upconversion (composite/S-video/component to DVI)
The digital hirez interface and full digital processing are the biggies from an audio standpoint. The "jitterless" digital interface between universal transports and nexgen processors will optimize acquisition and processing for all digital audio media (CD/DVD-A/SACD). Pioneer looks likely to be first out of the gate but keep your eyes on Denon - I expect them to agressively challenge Pioneer's lead.
