I bought mine while on a trip to Tokyo (shop demo model) and paid less than 1/2 the US retail price. Now, mind you, my menus are in Japanese but it isn't a problem now that there is an English-version manual online. As for the picture -- it is stunning and I compare it very favorably with my Sony G70/Faroudja 2200 combo (blacks aren't quite as nice as you might expect but the Sharp is really pretty incredible).
The real issue is whether the improvement from a high end DVD player provides enough addition to justify the cost. This I just can't say because I've always used ok, but not great ones. The best dvd player I've used is probably a denon 5000 (pre-progressive output days) and it is better (I still have it although it is having troubles lately loading dvd's) than my run-of-the-mill samsung (the s228) or my pioneer 733a. Actually, I think the pioneer has an edge with a progressive output but it is busy being in my music system for sacd/dvda playback.
If you can get the sharp I highly recommend it. I use it with an 8' firehawk screen (for dlp's) and the picture is stunning. It is also tough to beat a set-up time of about 5 minutes to adjust the feet and focus it.
