Home Video Asylum

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

Long time Inmate but Video neophite needs your wisdom.

The deal was simply, "Okay. We'll uproot our lives and move to a different house that needs a ton of work but only if I can get a really cool new TV."

Well, what I don't know about all this new display technology could fill several books.

The room is right for Plasma. 50". I need an integrated set-up, including speakers, so my (little) kids can watch Sponge Bob Square Pants without having to (God Forbid) fire-up the whole A/V system.

Been looking at the Pioneer PDP-5030HD, a 50" with the whole package at a price that won't shoot the pooch. Found one "review" of this unit, but by and large these A/V mags suck, and the "reviews" are little more than a repackaging of the maker's press kit.

I also looked at this receiver/monitor combo at a Best Buy, and frankly it didn't look as good at the 42" monitors that surrounded it.

Any suggestions? Insight? I'm not a videophile, and we don't watch a lot of broadcast, so really pretty darn good will be good enough.

TIA
