I recently purchased a factory refurbished JVC HRS-4600U SVHS on Ebay for $125.00 after my old Panasonic (what had been a high-end VHS model in 1990) died. I have to say I'm extremely impressed with the JVC's tape-handling capabilities - this particular model has tape calibration that really does clean up old, cheap or poorly tracking tapes. And picture and sound quality are outstanding, even in VHS mode - Super VHS is spectacular. The 4600 is about 3 years old, and has a lot of good features, is fairly heavy and solid feeling. More recent JVC's have been criticized for being lightweight and fragile, but the refurbs pop up on Ebay pretty often. I also understand the Philips VR-960BPH is quite good. I can't recommend newer Panasonic or Sony VHS models, having bought and returned a couple for problems out of the box before I found the JVC.
