Hi Abe!Congrats on your findings! Awesome, huh? :-)
The 'pulsing' on 1080i on your screen is interesting. I've honestly not encountered it on my screen. I wonder if it may be the power. My system is fairly well shielded. I have an ExactPower EP15A to lock in 120 volts which supplies a PS Audio Power Director. The PD gives me balanced power and always supplies 120 volts. My XBR is plugged into the PD. The 5900 is plugged into my PS Audio PP300.
Hmm, it is interesting that the Movie mode gives a slightly 'warmer' picture than the Pro setting with identical adjustments. I wonder if it's the red push that I spoke of before. It may also be a difference in the settings only accessible in the Service Mode of the XBR. I'm not sure if the two settings have different Service Mode settings. I recall reading over on Agoraquest.com (Sony site) over a year ago in disabling the red push in the Service Menu...hmmm and double hmmm.
BTW Abe, have you tried changing the "Pure Direct" (for audio) setting accessed through the Mode button on the player? If not, try the setting on 'All Off.' This turns off all video and digital circuitry. In my system, the background becomes blacker giving more ambience retrieval and a deeper soundstage as well as improved layering.
Happy Listening and Viewing.
Ken
