I bought the 46 inch Sony CRT rear projection TV for $1350 on sale at any of the big box stores a few weeks ago and am very pleased with it. I am particularly amazed at how bright and clear the picture is off axis, which was the big problem with the older projection units. While there are newer technologies, there have been advances in the older technologies too. I was told by the salesman that they have had problems with bulb life with LCD units,(as in replace every year) but that conventional CRT based units have become quite reliable.
Sony sells these in 46 ($1350), 51,($1600) 57 ($2000 or so) and 65 inch ($2400) sizes. The technology and controls are basically the same on all sizes. At least the 46 inch unit is not that bulky--it basically fits in the space vacated by the old 27 inch Sony console.
The depth is just under 2 ft, and the weight is a not that heavy $150 lbs. The photo above shows how it just nicely fit in the space between 2 cabinets housing other electronics gear
