So the problem exsists with one of the Avance Elipson 680's (4 ohm)at the center position?
If the mains are not shutting down with the normal configuration, I'd think the impedence is not the issue here, as they are also rated @ 4 ohms.
A cheap test with a coax replacing the optical could reveal a problem with the optical connection. Have you tried this?
Does the H/K have a discrete center channel volume control? If so, where is this set?
Which input terminals are you using on the center?
What guage is the center channel speaker wire and how far of a run is it?
