zoom feature on DVD players

can you explain this feature to me? i've been told by some zoom allows you to pick a point on the screen and zoom in. others have told me it only zooms in from the middle of the screen, point being to what, not show your dvd's in letterbox? i DON'T want that ripoff!
maybe someone could help me choose a player. i want a 5 or 6 disc player with zoom (from my choosen point on the screen) and the random/shuffle play for CD's.
