TV tuner to amp or preamp?

What is the correct way to hook up a Sony tv to an large stereo. Should the tv tuner set at variable output be connected directly to a basic power amp or can it go thru a reciever or seperate preamp. It seem like connection to a preamp would be like plugging two preamps in series and might increase noise with an imped mismatch? Ted
